A global research university,

powered by experience.

Northeastern University is renowned for their experiential learning model, high-impact research, deep partnerships and worldwide reach. As part of a global network of 13 campuses, the central London campus combines historic charm with modern innovation in the heart of the city.

Northeastern University London was one of the first major projects for our London studio. Our brief was to deliver in collaboration with the contractor a world-class facility spanning over 250,000 square feet. We detailed everything from specialist wet and dry technical labs to flexible classrooms, collaborative learning hubs, social spaces and modern offices.

‘The Northeastern University project marked Dakota’s first collaboration with Siren Design, and it was a resounding success. Siren brought creativity, collaboration, and a seamless working style to the table, integrating across all facets of the project – from the client team to the academic staff who now use the space daily.’

This large-scale, highly complex project also involved a significant level of detail – both from a design and technical point of view. To achieve we undertook a highly collaborative process. We worked closely with the Northeastern client team – both from London and Boston – and also with Arup and the technical consultants, contractors and educators to develop the design and refine the details to ensure a highly functional, yet inspiring and innovative educational facility. We also collaborated across our global studios, calling in the experience of our team in Australia to deliver the best possible results.

‘Since students began occupying the space in September, feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. The environment has proven to be both inspiring and supportive, fostering a vibrant atmosphere where the wider student community can truly thrive.’

One of the main challenges of this project was working within a very old building and transforming that into the modern way of learning, whilst also looking to the future to make it highly sustainable. Our objective was to give students high quality learning rooms along with areas for quiet work and collaboration. There was also a high degree of technicality and complex services required for areas such as the laboratories.

As proof of its sustainability, the project is targeting a BREEAM rating of ‘excellent’. Every environment was carefully considered to inspire both teaching and discovery. We created modern facilities such as soundproof study pods, flexible learning spaces, and cutting-edge labs.

We also incorporated spaces for students and teaching staff to thrive – social hubs, breakout spaces and panoramic 360° city views. In addition, it was critical to provide a highly supportive and inclusive environment, which means that the campus design is accessible whilst also providing wellbeing spaces and multi-faith rooms.

The result is a cutting-edge campus designed to attract students from across the globe.
