The meeting place

How do you achieve a ‘wow’ without the ‘ouch’ of costs?

This was the challenge of the Miller St lobby project.

Our brief was to refresh the ground lift lobby of 60 Miller Street North Sydney. Transforming the space into a premium experience and a stand-out hub within North Sydney.

The design concept was to provide the buzzing city centre of North Sydney with a central ‘meeting place’, reminiscent of its natural landforms and traditional Aboriginal occupants. The design elements acknowledged the region’s physical attributes, creating organic zones and a hub to connect people of the past and present, as well as introducing contour and relief patterns linking to the site topography.

The perforated bulkheads with warm cove lighting makes the zones feel intimate and grounded which is unique for a lobby space. The materials used included local veneer, warm metals, rich leathers and natural stone look tiles.

The centrepiece of the space is a rug designed in collaboration with Designer Rugs. This anchors and delineates the space beautifully with the patterns and colours being inspired from ancestral rock engravings of the Cammeraygal people (the notion of contour vs. relief). The aim of this physical impression was to provide greater connection to the intangible qualities of Aboriginal land.
